Works in earth
An ongoing body of work that combines foraged and repurposed materials including clay, soil, and stone with techniques associated with vernacular earthen architecture in Wales and the wider UK to create sculptural objects that sit between art and craft. Making is preceded by research and fieldwork, often involving a detailed examination of geological maps and local industries, walking in the landscape and/or connecting with nearby ‘hole diggers’ like farmers and ground workers to divert the earth they have extracted.
Alongside mirroring the geological past in their material composition, pieces often reference geomorphic features on the Earth’s surface through abstracted marks, curves and hollows. Through these methodologies, the intention is to create work that embodies the deep histories of the ground beneath us and fosters a reciprocal existence with the more-than-human world. It is hoped that the work encourages us to reflect on the value we place on earthly matter and what role material circularity has in contemporary craft and the current ecological discourse.

Smoke-fired (2021-2022)

A collection of works that drew inspiration from the landscapes of North Wales. Curved and lines that appeared on works echoed an undulating hillside, dried seed pod or the snaking stem of a plant. Decoration came from the treatment of the clay and the smoke-firing process rather than manufactured glazes and oxides.
Each object was made by hand with iron-rich clay manufactered in Stoke-on-Trent from raw materials sourced from the UK. Once formed, they underwent hours of smoothing and burnishing before their outdoor firing. The works were fired to a low temperature in an electric kiln before going through the ancient process of smoke firing with repurposed wood chippings from a local woodworking studio and garden clippings. Once fired, each piece was cleaned and finished with a Welsh beeswax and olive oil blend.
