Ynys Enlli (Bardsey
Island) Artist Residency

An artist residency on Ynys Enlli (Bardsey Island) in July 2024. Ynys Enlli, also known as the “Island of 20,000 Saints,” is rich in geological history with significant ecological and cultural importance. During the residency, I explored the geology and materiality of the island’s clay-rich soils and how they are interwoven with human activity, from prehistoric earth dwellings to cloddiau (stone/soil banks) and agricultural practices. The island's geology is a blend of rocks from the Cambrian and Ordovician periods, dating back around 500 to 450 million years. These geological formations include slates, mudstones, and sandstones, mirroring the typical composition of Pen Llŷn.
I faciliated a 2-hour workshop during the residency for the island’s residents and day-trip visitors. During the workshop, we made polished clay balls from local clay-rich soils gathered responsibly on Ynys Enlli using a material test technique I use in the studio, inspired by the Japanese art form of Dorodango. People were welcome to share personal stories related to soil during the workshop.
