Ynys Enlli (Bardsey Island) Artist Residency

(Upcoming)
A week-long artist residency on Ynys Enlli (Bardsey Island) in July 2024. Ynys Enlli, also known as the “Island of 20,000 Saints,” is rich in geological history with significant ecological and cultural importance. During the residency, I’ll explore the geology and materiality of the island’s clay-rich soils and how they are interwoven with human activity, from prehistoric earth dwellings to cloddiau (stone/soil banks) and agricultural practices. The island's geology is a blend of rocks from the Cambrian and Ordovician periods, dating back around 500 to 450 million years. These geological formations include slates, mudstones, and sandstones, mirroring the typical composition of Pen Llŷn.
I'll faciliate a 2-hour workshop during the residency for the island’s residents and any day-trip visitors who'd like to join. (You can visit the Ynys Enlli for the day or stay overnight from March until October with boat trips from Porth Meudwy in Aberdaron). During the workshop, we'll make polished clay balls from boulder clay and soils gathered on Ynys Enlli using a technique inspired by the Japanese art form of Dorodango. The workshop will be a space to contemplate the geology of the island. People are welcome to share personal stories related to soil during the workshop. More details will be announced soon!

I’m immensely grateful and humbled to Ymddiriedolaeth Ynys Enlli Cyf for this opportunity to spend time on the island making and researching.
